The Infants’ School staff - 1920s

1920s

This photograph was taken in the school playground and shows:- Standing - Elsie May Bromyard and Edith Alice Pearsall;  Seated - Clara Florence Grove; Lillian Tolley and Annie Warr.  Lillian Tolley was appointed headmistress in December 1920 and remained at the school until 1928.  She was born in Bewdley in 1890 and had held a post in Wollescote as an assistant mistress there before moving to Wollaston.  Clara Grove had been a pupil at Wollaston and a pupil teacher.  She had no experience of teacher training and remained at Wollaston as an uncertificated teacher until her retirement in December 1943 after 46 years teaching in the Infants’ School.  Annie Warr was the only other certificated member of staff and she left her post in December 1923 after 18 years at Wollaston.
